Hamiltonian Engineering for Quantum Systems

We describe different strategies for using a semi-classical controller to engineer quantum Hamiltonians to solve control problems such as quantum state or process engineering and optimization of observables.

Lecture 15: Open quantum systems: Hamiltonian formulation and master equations

Open quantum systems are ones that are coupled to an environment that we cannot control or observe completely and therefore must average over in our modeling. In the last lecture we saw how to represent open quantum system dynamics in terms of the Kraus representation (also referred to as a CPTP map, or operator sum representation (OSR)). This representation let us write the reduced state of th...

Quantum Bi-Hamiltonian Systems

We define quantum bi-Hamiltonian systems, by analogy with the classical case, as derivations in operator algebras which are inner derivations with respect to two compatible associative structures. We find such structures by means of the associative version of Nijenhuis tensors. Explicit examples, e.g. for the harmonic oscillator, are given.

Observer-based Hamiltonian identification for quantum systems

An observer-based Hamiltonian identification algorithm for quantum systems is proposed. For the 2-level case an exponential convergence result based on averaging arguments and some relevant transformations is provided. The convergence for multi-level cases is discussed using some heuristic arguments and the relevance of the method is tested via simulations. Finally, the robustness issue with re...

Supplemental Materials for Adiabatic Quantum Search in Open Systems DERIVATION OF THE EFFECTIVE HAMILTONIAN

where |m〉 is the marked state and |ψ0〉 = 1 N ∑N x=1 |x〉. We assume that this Hamiltonian is implemented using L qubits, such that the states |x〉 in the search space are represented by the N = 2 eigenstates of the Pauli operators { σ j } , with j = 1, . . . , L, acting on the individual qubits. We consider the situation where each qubit is coupled to an independent, bosonic bath, described by th...
